Moore Family

1874HouseLargerWe're not sure who is in this picture.  It was taken outside the original house and includes James and Mary Moore.

The family line that we trace started on September 5, 1861 with the marriage of Mary Burroughs to James Edmond Moore.  James and Mary had  ten children. In April 1874, Mary's brother F.G. Burroughs (founder of the current Burroughs and Chapin  Corp.) gave his sister 1450 acres of land "in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my sister Mary..."

On August 5, 1873, Mary Moore gave birth to her 6th child, Benjamin Franklin Moore.  Benjamin married a local girl Nettie Waller on March 8, 1893.  They lived in the home pictured on  this page until it burned down in 1914. You will be staying in the 1914 home which they built on the foundations of the original house.

Nettie and Benjamin had eight children - five girls and three boys. Our four rooms are named after four of the daughters and in the kitchen hangs the picture of the fifth daughter who watches over all the food preparation.

Alma Moore was born on January 19, 1894.  She married R. O. Hanson on June 12, 1919.  They had one daughter, Alma Lonnal Hanson.

Celeste Moore was born on November 17, 1896 and married Wendell Smith on March 21, 1921. Her husband died just two years after they were married and Celeste never remarried.  There are still many folks in Conway that recall fond memories of Celeste.

Aleene Moore was born on September 4, 1899. At the young age of 17 she married Charles Hinson on October 11, 1916 and gave Nettie and Benjamin their first grandchild, James Louis Hinson on October 2, 1918.  Aleene and Charles had one more son and two daughters.

Myrtle Moore was born  on October 7, 1902.  On February 16, 1930, she married her sister Vera's brother-in-law R.E. Ouderkirk. Myrtle was the last of the sisters to live in the house.

Hubert Moore was Benjamin and Nettie's first son.  He was born on November 2, 1904 and married Joe Neal Vaught on January 20, 1931.

Vera Moore was the youngest sister born on January 20, 1906. She married Cecil Ouderkirk on March 30, 1928.  About two years later, her older sister Myrtle would marry Cecil's brother.  Vera and Cecil lived in the small brick house just west of the Moore Farm House.  They had one daughter and one son.

Eugene Moore was born on September 9, 1908.  He worked with his dad as a brick mason for the Huntington's who were building Brookgreen Gardens and a Spanish villa on the beach.  It was at the work site which is now Brookgreen Gardens that he met his bride Matilda Fletcher.  Matilda was a young Scottish girl who's job it was to walk the Huntington's dogs.  Apparently she often walked by the area where Eugene was working and they married on June 18, 1932.  They had four children.

Jack Moore was born November 20, 1912.  Jack was married twice and had five children.
